It is listed by the Guinness Book of World Records as the world's largest underground lake. The Lost Sea is part of the extensive and historic cave system called Craighead Caverns. The caverns have been known and used since the days of the Cherokee Indian nation. The cave expands into a series of huge rooms from a small opening in the side of the mountain. Approximately one mile from the entrance, is a room called "the Council Room". Many Indian artifacts have been found. Some of the items discovered include pottery, arrowheads, weapons, and jewelry. For many years, there were persistent rumors of a large underground lake somewhere in a cave, but it was not discovered until 1905. In that year, a thirteen--year--old boy named Ben Sands crawled through a small opening three hundred feet underground. He found himself in a large cave half filled with water. Today tourists visit the Lost Sea and ride far out onto it in glass- bottomed boats powered by electric motors. More than thirteen acres of water have been mapped out so far and still no end to the lake has been found. Even though teams of divers have tried to explore the Lost Sea, the full extent of it is still unknown. 41. D Bill Javis took over our village news-agency at a time of life when most of us only want to relax. He just thought he would like something but not too much to do, and the news-agency was ready-made. The business produced little enough for him, but Bill was a man who only wanted the simplicity and order and regularity of the job. He had been a long-serving sailor, and all his life had done everything by the clock. Every day he opened his shop at six a.m. to catch the early trade; the papers arrived on his door-step before that. Many of Bill’s customers were city workers, and the shop was convenient for the station. Business was tailing off by 10 o’clock, so at eleven sharp Bill closed for lunch. It was hard luck on anybody who wanted a paper or magazine in the afternoon, for most likely Bill would be down on the river bank, fishing, and his nearest competitor was five kilometers away. Sometime in the afternoon, the evening paper landed on the doormat, and at 4 o’clock Bill reopened. The evening rush lasted till seven, and it was worthwhile. He lived in a flat above the shop, alone. Except in the very bad weather, you always knew where to find him in the afternoon, as I have said. Once, on a sunny afternoon, I walked home along the river bank from a shopping trip to the village. By my watch it was three minutes past four, so I was astonished to see Bill sitting there on his little chair with a line in the water. He had had no luck, I could see, but he was making no effort to move. “What’s wrong, Bill?” I called out from the path. For answer, he put a hand in his jacket and took out a big, golden object. For a moment I had no idea what it could be, and then it suddenly went off with a noise like a fire engine. Stopping the bell, Bill held the thing up and called back, “Ten to four, you see, and this is dead right.” I had never known anyone carrying a brass alarm clock round with him before. 53.Bill opened the shop so early in the day because ___________. A.he liked to do as much as possible before he went to work B.the shop had to be open when the morning papers came C.he was never sure of the time D.it was then that he did a lot of business 54.You might say “hard luck” to someone who __________. A.has just heard some very good news B.is less fortunate than he or she ought to be C.puts great effort into whatever he or she tries D.fails through his or her own fault entirely 55.On that sunny afternoon, the writer was surprised when he saw Bill because ________. A.he thought it was late for Bill to be still fishing B.he thought Bill was ill, since he was not moving at all C.Bill had not caught anything, and that seemed strange D.Bill stayed in his flat 56.From the information given in the passage, who or what do you think was wrong? A.The bell was; it must have gone off at the wrong time. B.Bill was; he had dropped off to sleep. C.The writer’s watch was fast. D.Bill’s clock was wrong; it was very old.
E Music lessons may improve memory and learning ability in young children by promoting different patterns of brain development, a study shows. After a year of musical training, children aged between 4 and 6 performed better at a standard memory test than did children who were not taught music. The findings suggest that music could be useful for building the learning capacity of young minds. Earlier studies have shown that older children given music lessons become better at IQ tests than those who are musically untrained, but this is the first to show such a benefit in children so young. Professor Laurel Trainor, of McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, also found clear differences in the ways in which children’s brains responded to sound after a year of musical training. “This is the first study to show that brain responses in young, musically trained and untrained children change differently over the course of a year,” she said. “These changes are likely to be related to the cognitive(认知的)benefit that is seen with musical training.” Professor Trainor’s team looked at 12 children, 6 of whom had just started extra-curricular(课程外)music lessons and 6 of whom were not being taught any music except that included as a standard part of their school curriculum(课程标准). During the year all 12 children had their brains examined four times using magnetoencephalography (MEG), and each child was played two types of sound — white noise and a violin tone. The MEG measurements showed that all children responded more to violin sounds than to white noise, reflecting a preference for meaningful tones, and their response times fell over the course of the year as their brains matured. 57. This passage is mainly about _______________. A. music lessons are good for the memory and learning capability B. the benefit from musical training for children C. a study on twelve young children’s brains D. new technology to examine children’s brains 58. It can be concluded from the text that ____________________. A. the study is the first one on the effect of musical training on children’s brains B. scientists got no valuable results from the earlier studies on the topic C. children musically trained remember things better than those untrained D. older children get more benefit from musical training than younger ones 59. What do we know about the twelve children tested in the study? A. None of them had been musically trained before. B. Only 6 of them had a knowledge of music before. C. Not all of them had been taught some music in school. D. All of them were required to learn some music in school. 60. We know from the MEG measurements that ______________________. A. the older a child is, the more quickly he / she responds to sounds B. children of different ages respond to sounds at the same speed C. human brains prefer musical sounds to white noise D. all the twelve children like to learn to play the violin very much

One possible version: Every student will be faced with the question when he passes the college entrance examinations: Should we choose a good major or a good university first? Some students prefer to consider majors first so that they can learn what they are interested in. It will also make it possible for them to take their favorite jobs in the future. However, those who think differently believe that the environment is important to one’s development and that graduates from leading universities are often more likely to find a good job. In my opinion, the best choice is a good major at a good university. If we cannot obtain both, the first thing to consider is a good major, because no matter where we study, we can still achieve a lot in a certain field if we try our best.
